  • A Legacy of Excellence in Dairy Production

    Established in 1956 as the National Milk Board under the Ministry of Agriculture, Milco (Pvt) Ltd has a rich history of commitment to enhancing national milk production and supporting the livelihoods of dairy farmers. Our founding objectives included reducing unemployment and combating malnutrition among children, and these goals continue to guide our mission today.

    In 1986, the National Milk Board transitioned into the Milk Industries of Lanka Co. Limited as part of a World Bank initiative. From 1997 to 2003, we operated as Kiriya Milk Industries, a joint venture with the Indian government, benefiting from the management and technical expertise of India’s National Dairy Development Board. In 2004, following the dissolution of the joint venture, we became a fully government-owned entity, named as Milco (Pvt) Ltd.

  • Our Operations

    Milco operates four fully functional factories located in Colombo, Digana, Ambewela, and Polonnaruwa, with a fifth automated factory currently under construction in Badalgama. Our production capacity is an impressive 475,000 liters of milk per day. We proudly source milk exclusively from local dairy farmers, ensuring that all our Highland-branded products are made from fresh, Sri Lankan milk—never from imports or reconstituted sources.

    We specialize in collecting, processing, packaging, and marketing a diverse range of milk products under the Highland brand. Our offerings include:

  • Quality Assurance

    Milco is committed to maintaining the highest quality standards. Our Ambewela milk factory holds ISO 20000:2018 certification for food safety, and our condensed milk has received SLS certification. We rigorously test all raw materials to ensure freshness and quality, with a focus on food safety quality and nutritional value. Milk is accepted only after comprehensive quality checks; any milk that does not meet our standards is rejected at the chilling center.

  • Supporting Our Farmers

    We have established a robust network of 95 milk collection centers (MCCs) linked to 1,423 Farmer Managed Societies (FMS), with approximately 14,500 registered dairy farmers supplying us directly. The average price for a liter of fresh milk is Rs. 160/=. Payments are based on the compositional quality of the milk, primarily its fat and solid content. Milk is accepted only after thorough quality checks. Any milk with poor keeping quality due to microbial growth or contamination with chemical adulterants or other extraneous substances is rejected at the chilling center.

    The collected milk is chilled immediately and transported to factories within 24 hours in insulated tankers.



    Our farmers benefit from:

    1. Providing direct marketing facility to farmers for their production.

    2. Providing free transportation from FMSs to MCCs in order to insure the guaranteed farm gate price.

    3. Milk is purchased on accepted and standard milk price chart.

    4. Providing technical knowhow and follow up actions by qualified field officers to develop farmers in dairy farming.

    5. Providing benefits for 27 occasional requirement of life circle of farmers through Milco Farmers Social Security Fund.

    6. Providing cattle feed and other inputs at concessionary prices on recovery basis.

    7. Liaison and coordination with relative government and non-government organizations to fulfill the requirement of farmers

  • Innovation and Tradition

    While we embrace innovation and new technologies, we also honor our legacy. Many of our recipes, like Highland yogurt, have been perfected over decades to ensure their authentic taste. Our Highland yogurt, with a 14-day shelf life, is crafted from high-quality fresh cow milk, with no chemical preservatives added. Our ice creams are made exclusively from cow milk and dairy cream, and stringent quality assurance practices are in place.
