The National Milk Board which was formed government
agency involved in dairy development, milk
collection, milk processing and marketing since 1956
to 1986. In 1986, it was converted into Milk
Industries of Lanka Co. Limited under the World Bank
project. All properties and functions of N M B were
transferred to Milco. Milco is a public company
which has effective plant capacity of 200,000 liters
per day. It has three milk plants located in
Narahenpita, Digana and Ambewela. Colombo Milk
factory which was established in 1956 produced
pasteurized milk, sterilized milk, yoghurt, ice
cream and butter. Ambewela milk factory which was
established in 1974 produced milk powder and butter.
Digana milk factory was established in 1989 process
milk into pasteurized milk, sterilized milk,
yoghurt, ice cream and cheese. Milco has well
established milk collecting network which consists
of 72 milk chilling centers and 1700 Farmers Managed
Societies. There are about 70,000 dairy farmers
supply milk to Milco chilling centers directly or
indirectly. Their milk is valued and paid according
to the compositional quality, mainly fat percentage
and SNF percentage. Average payment is Rs. 25/- per
liter. The farmers who are involved in Farmer
Managed Societies are given lot of subsidies, such
as supplying cattle feed for a concessionary price,
supply of veterinary treatments, supply of dairy
development techniques etc., In addition to that,
lot of financial benefits are granted to them to
encourage dairy industry.
Milco dairy products are sold in the market under
the trade name of “Highland “. These products are
produced using only local milk that is produced by
local dairy farmers. These products are mainly
categorized into two varieties, namely liquid milk
and dairy products. Liquid milk such as pasteurized
and sterilized are very natural products and no any
additives or chemicals are added to these milk to
extend their shelf life. Therefore these milk
products are very close to the nature. Other
products named as value added products, such as
yoghurts, ice cream, cheese and butter are also very
natural products and no any additives or chemicals
are added for extending the shelf life. In addition
to the main raw materials, other raw materials which
we use for producing these products are sugar,
gelatin, glucose syrup, stabilizers, emulsifiers
etc., are purchased from well reputed organizations
the quality of these products can be guaranteed
without any doubt.
These Highland products are
produced according to the recipes since National
Milk Board. As an Example that we produce are dairy
ice cream which is only dairy fat is used for this
processing. Therefore, our ice cream is really milk
tastes ice cream which is available in the market.
The fresh milk which is collected today is coming to
the market tomorrow. Hence, our products are most
fresh dairy products which are available in the
market. Further, other special ingredients such as
yoghurt culture, rennet, and gelatin are specially
purchase from Denmark and Germany etc., Therefore,
our product quality is superior than the other dairy
products in the market.
