17th January 1974 Ambewela spray dried Milk Powder Factory
was inaugurated by Late Hon. Hector Kobbekaduwa Esq. the
Minister for the Agriculture and Land under the Late Prime
Minister Madame Srimao Bandaranayake.
Ambewela is in the Nuwaraeliya district, 6,000 ft above
sea level, crossing the border of the Uva province and the
Central province.And then in 1978, National Milk Board
introduced their product under a new logo and a brand name
Highland – Refreshingly Sri Lankan- re-packing from the
factory premises.
1989 production of Butter began….
Today 33,000 kilos of butter is produced at Ambewela.
In
year 2003 the packing plant was upgraded to cater to the
new demands. This new packing plant at Ambewela produces
30,000 packs of spray dried milk powder per day. The
Ambewela plant is really a golden asset of the nation that
ensures nutrition to generation to come.

Today the total milk collection has reached 100
million liters per annum. MILCO is the premier dairy
producer in Sri Lanka with over 55% of the market share.
It is projected to reach 200 million liter in the next 10
years.
Establishment of “Planning committee on
Development” lead by a grade one manager will contribute a
lot towards further development of SDMF.
